Last year Katy Perry was set to guest feature in an episode of Sesame Street. The episode ended up getting banned do to parents’ reactions to her outfit, most notably making comments about her cleavage. (See above photo) Parents thought the outfit was sexually suggestive and therefore not a good influence on children. She chose the dress out of a short assortment of outfits that the directors of the show had picked out for her. That means they were already pre-censored or pre-filtered before Katy picked it. . Katy has said that she never thought of it as sexually suggestive and that if she had, or if someone had pointed it out, she would have changed.
Before the incident, Katy had suggested more innocent motives for wanting to star on an episode of the show; “I love that Hot N Cold could translate to Sesame Street, I just love that. I’m gonna have kids someday, and I love that some pop star out there is gonna change their lyrics to make my kids bounce in their diapers.”
The directors of Sesame Street pleaded innocent with this statement: “Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube.”
Perry then starred in a segment of Saturday Night Live poking fun at the incident.
